Holy City’s seasonal Bowen’s Island Oyster Stout will join the brewery’s growing lineup of canned offerings next month, the brewery announced Friday.

SC Beer News Roundup: New brews, more capacity and PARTIES!
So much SC beer news to write about, so little time to write about it (because real life sometimes gets in the way).
During the past week, many of the breweries across the state have announced news about either new beers they’re releasing soon or ones returning for their seasonal appearances, and a flurry of other news. Here’s a rundown of what you might have missed (and I haven’t had a chance to write about):
If you’ve ventured outside this week – and I hope you have, hermit – you’d be OK in thinking winter had made an early appearance in SC. While it’s not quite that point, RJ’s winter seasonal First Snow will be blowing into town soon. It’s on tap at the brewery now and should see distribution soon.
RJ also recently unveiled their new Good Boy Stout, which will be part of the brewery’s new seasonal rotation. The beer, named for brewery dog Stout, will be available from January through early March and will be slapped with RJ’s new bottle design.
As they are wont to do, HCB rolled out yet another new beer this week. This time, it’s a 7.6% IPA named Overly Friendly. It’s brewed with Citra and Sorachi Ace hops in both the boil and dry-hopping stages.
Shiftee, their 8.5% American strong ale, is also back on tap, and their excellent Bowen’s Island Oyster Stout is on its way as well.
Columbia’s own will be hosting its inaugural Halloween party the evening of the 31st. If the thought of dressing up for a costume contest, eating grub from The Wurst Wagon and hanging out in a “haunted” brewery don’t sound enticing enough, maybe this will: Conquest will be tapping up to four new beers Thursday night. The brewery’s keeping details about the new brews under wraps for now, but having had the chance to sample them all, I can say this is an event to not miss.
Speaking of parties, Thomas Creek will be throwing their annual Brewery Bash on Saturday, November 2, from 1-6 PM. The yearly party will give a lot of folks the first look at TC’s ongoing expansion efforts. The party will include BBQ and brats prepared by TC Brewmaster Tom Davis, live music, a costume contest and more. Expect to see a wealth of TC’s brews on tap, as well as some cask-aged offerings … and maybe a surprise or two ;)
RJ Rockers shuffles, expands beer lineup
If you think things have been quiet for Spartanburg’s RJ Rockers brewery, think again. The Upstate brewery has been working on a flurry of projects, including expanding availability, new branding and more. I caught up with the RJR crew this past weekend and got a rundown of what’s in store for the brewery:
- Firstly – and much to the excitement of many – is the news that RJ’s Son of a Peach wheat ale has been given the upgrade from seasonal to year-round. With RJR now available throughout Georgia and Florida joining the distribution area soon, the brewery decided to make the brew regularly and more widely.
- With SOAP now out of the seasonal rotation, a new batch of seasonal releases are on deck. Gruntled Pumpkin and First Snow will remain in their fall and winter slots, respectively, and Stout will be moved to a late-winter release. Replacing SOAP in the spring will be the new Strawbeery Wheat Ale.
- RJR’s label artwork will be getting a facelift, beginning with the new design unveiled for Black Perle. The rest of RJR’s label artwork will undergo similar changes in the near future.
- Speaking of Black Perle – RJR’s 9.5% black IPA – it will be the first release in the brewery’s new special edition four-pack series. Those bottles will hit shelves in November followed by the beer formerly known as Impeachment in January. (The brewery doesn’t want to seem political with the formerly draft-only beer, and now that it’ll be more widely available, they’ll be giving it a new moniker.) New beers in the series will follow.
- A new one-off draft-only series of beers under the Chalkboard label will soon begin hitting taps. These are one-and-done brews that will allow the brewers to play around with different hops, yeast and more. The first Chalkboard beer will be a white IPA from RJR Head Brewer Taylor White.
Quest prepping 1st batch of pumpkin saison
My love for both pumpkin beers and saisons has been well-documented during the life of this blog. And while I’ve had plenty of both during the years, I have yet to try a combination of the two.
Fortunately, my friends at Quest know the fastest way to my heart as they announced on Thursday they had started brewing the inaugural batch of their fall seasonal Kermesse Pumpkin Saison. There aren’t a lot of details about it yet, but it’s a saison made with pumpkins, so it’s going to be awesome.
A release party will be held sometime during the week of Sept. 9.
RJ Rockers’ new Day Drinker IPA designed to live up to its name
Ah, day drinking. Who doesn’t love cracking open a few cold ones while the sun is still up, especially on a sunny summer day. Here in South Carolina, summer afternoons generally call for lighter fare.
Enter Day Drinker IPA, the newest brew from Spartanburg’s RJ Rockers. The light, sessionable IPA designed for … well, day drinking. The beer was brewed for the first time Thursday morning.
Day Drinker will come in at around 5% ABV and feature a lighter malt flavor, bitter hops on the front and more of a stinging floral and citrus finish. Keep an eye out for it when it’s released in late June.
Westbrook Gose returns next week
You’ll have to wait a little while longer for cans of it, but in the meantime, Westbrook‘s Gose will return to draft and bottles beginning next week.
The tart and salty 4% German-style sour wheat beer returns just in time for the warmer weather. You can expect a canned version to arrive this summer, at which time it will promptly become my go-to summer beer.
