Importer of Israeli, Spanish craft beer expands into SC

While the United States is more or less synonymous with the ever-growing craft beer market, other countries are beginning to throw their hats into the ring and teaming up with stateside distributors to get their products into the hands of American craft beer drinkers.

One of these companies is Sublime Imports, a Dallas, TX-based distributor  specializing in Mediterranean craft breweries, specifically those in Israel and Spain. The company is the first and only of its kind in the US, and after teaming up with Columbia-based Aleph Wines Corporation has recently entered the South Carolina marketplace.

River Rat inks deal with Advintage

Columbia’s upcoming River Rat Brewery announced Tuesday it would soon sign on the dotted line with the Advintage Distributing Co.

While the brewery’s owners recently said they were strongly considering signing with Advintage, a final decision wasn’t made until recently. River Rat will join SC breweries COAST, Westbrook and River Dog on Advintage’s roster.

Advintage is one of SC’s craft beer heavy hitters when it comes to distribution. They’re responsible for – among many others – Stone, Bell’s, Allagash, Great Divide, Victory, Avery, Ommegang and many more US and international breweries.

Charlotte’s Four Friends expands SC distribution (?)

FourFriends

This one must have sneaked in under the radar, but apparently Four Friends Brewing out of Charlotte may have begun – or will soon begin? – expanding distributing in South Carolina.

At least one of the NC brewery’s beers – their 6.6% Uptown Brown ale – is now on tap at Columbia’s Flying Saucer. Four Friends is signed with Comer Distributing Inc. out of Rock Hill, which distributes to a lot of SC counties including Richland (and with it, Columbia).

The other day I teased forthcoming news about new breweries planning to distribute in SC, but I’ll be honest: Four Friends was not one I heard about. I’ll have more information as I learn it.

Clarification: This is not the first time Four Friends has distributed in Columbia, but not their first time in South Carolina. Fort Mill’s Grapevine wine and beer store has previously carried them.

Rafa Distributing aims to ‘put good shit’ in your mouth

Rafa

When Austin’s Jester King was announced as one of the breweries pouring at this year’s Brewvival, it was news that took a lot of people by surprise. Not only because the farmhouse brewery made no indication of finding a home in SC, but also because they weren’t a presence in bigger markets that usually get distribution before us, such as Georgia and North Carolina.

Even more surprising was when a pretty sizable amount of Jester King’s beers began popping up on shelves in Greenville, Charleston and Columbia.

So, how did they get here? Rafa Distributing, a.k.a. Lauren Shor, a solo distributor that has landed a pretty nice slate of accounts after less than a couple of months in existence.

In addition to Jester King, Rafa represents Evil Twin, Stillwater, Southern Star, Argus Cider – which you may have seen pop up lately – Local Option, Against the Grain, Hof Ten Dormaal and 12 Percent Imports.

The goal of Rafa? “My goal is to put good shit into people’s mouths,” Shor recently told CHSbeer in a Q&A you should go read. The focus now is to keep the company’s slate small and manageable because, in Shor’s words, “Distributors suck and breweries hate them. However, they need to use them by law. So I wanted to create a brewery-focused distributor.”
