COAST rebottles Old Nuptial barleywine

coast-logo-pdfsmIn May 2011, COAST released Old Nuptial, a barleywine brewed to commemorate the wedding of the Charleston Beer Exchange‘s Scott Shor (who along with fellow CBX co-owner Rich Carley helped brewed the beer back in 2009). It was an 11% beer half aged in bourbon barrels for 18 months.

Since its release, the beer has grown to become a much-desired brew in SC beer circles and beyond. And this past weekend, COAST decided it was time to release more Old Nup upon the world.

Boy King climbs BeerAdvocate charts

coast-logo-pdfsmMany people (yours truly included) consider COAST‘s Boy King imperial IPA as one of the best in its style on the East Coast, if not the country. And now the users of BeerAdvocate seem to agree, having ranked the occasionally released DIPA in the top 50 on the site.

During the weekend, Boy King reached No. 40 on BA’s list of Most Popular American Double/Imperial IPAs, with an average score of 96 (“world-class”) according to BA users. The ranking puts Boy King ahead of such beers as Wicked Weed’s Freak of Nature and New England Brewing Co.’s Ghandi-Bot, and just a step below Firestone Walker’s Double Jack.

Boy King is the only South Carolina beer to crack the top 50

COAST releases 2013 BA Blackbeerd Thursday

coast-logo-pdfsm

Following the news last week that COAST would be bottling this year’s vintage of its barrel-aged Blackbeerd imperial stout this week comes the news that bottles of the beer will be released beginning this week.

Early Tuesday, COAST announced bombers of this year’s BA Blackbeerd will be available for purchase at the brewery beginning Thursday, December 5. This year’s release was aged in the same Blanton’s bourbon barrels as the 2012 vintage, giving the beer a more oaky characteristic in contrast to the bourbon-forward release last year. A total of 90 cases were bottled, with 20 sent to stores and 70 available at the brewery. As usual, the bottles at $15 each, and there is no purchase limit other than the legal limit of 288 oz. per person.

The ship has sailed in once again, as COAST‘s barrel-aged Blackbeerd imperial stout is returning.

Starting Tuesday, the 9.3% stout will be available at the brewery on draft only. The beer will be bottled next week. Expect the announcement of a release date soon.

This will be the second version in a row aged in Blanton’s bourbon barrels for a year. The November 2012 release – considered by many to be the best yet – was also aged in Blanton’s barrels. The brewery says to expect more oak and less bourbon this time around. The beer has previously been aged in Jack Daniel’s and Buffalo Trace barrels, and then a blend of the two.

Brewvival tickets on sale Nov. 29

brewvival2014

Tickets for the fifth annual Brewvival beer festival will go on sale this Friday, November 29, beginning at 11 AM.

During the weekend, preliminary details about the February 22, 2014, festival were released. As usual, the festival will be held at the field across from the COAST brewery in North Charleston. Tickets will cost the same as last year – $65 – and can be purchased online or in person, likely at the brewery and fellow festival sponsor, The Charleston Beer Exchange. More details about how to get tickets will be released before Friday.

One small change from last year’s festival: It’s an hour shorter, running from noon to 5 PM this time. (Fingers crossed it won’t be as muddy this time around.) Expect more information – including the announcement of the keynote speaker and a list of participating breweries – to be announced in the coming weeks.

Hopoholics Anonymous returns to Barley’s Oct. 30

IMG_4092

Most “anonymous” meetings are a time for people with serious problems to gather, commiserate and work toward getting back on the right path.

Hop addiction may not be as serious as … well, real addictions, but if you’re fiending for that sticky green, Greenville’s Barley’s is here to help.

On October 30, the Upstate bar is hosting another session of its Hopoholics Anonymous, an annual event dedicated to the all things hoppy. This year, 33 of the bar’s taps will be pouring the bittering suds to help you get your fix.

The event features both national and in-state breweries. On the SC beer side, COAST‘s Boy King and Westbrook‘s Citrus Ninja Exchange will be representing the Lowcountry, while Greenville’s own Quest will be brining a cask of their wet-hopped Golden Fleece and a keg of their Ellida IPA aged in Dark Corner Lewis Redmond whiskey barrels. RJ Rockers out of Spartanburg will have their NoDa collaboration PIPA Long Hoppings around, too.

Other notable brews on tap include Foothills Jade IPA, Sierra Nevada Blood Shot Imperial Red Ale, a cask of Bell’s Two Hearted, Stone’s latest batch of Enjoy By IPA (11.12.13) and plenty more. There will also be a few surprises in store. You can find the full tap list here.

Feed the need beginning at 7 PM that night.
