Holy City expands tasting room hours

holycity

Holy City‘s been doing a lot of expanding lately. They’ve expanded their bottling capabilities, the number of taps they have in the tasting room, even the size of their bar. But what good is all that if you don’t have the time to sit down and enjoy a few pints?

Well, have no fear. On Monday, the brewery announced it had expanded its tasting room hours to 30 hours per week. That, obviously, gives you more time to make it though their slate of beers. Here are their new hours:

Monday and Tuesday: 4-6 p.m.

Wednesday – Friday: 3-8 p.m.

Saturday: Noon – 8 p.m.

Sunday: Noon – 4 p.m.

Westbrook BA Mexican Cake release details announced

Westbrook

SC beer geeks have been champing at the bit ever since Westbrook announced plans to release a barrel-aged version of its Mexican Cake imperial stout. Forums have been inundated with guesses as to when the bottles would be released, what the price would be, how many bottles people could get and so on. Well, now all those questions have been answered.

You’ll recall the beer in question is the original batch of Mexican Cake produced in 2011 that has been aging since then. Adjuncts – cinnamon, peppers, etc. – were added after barrel aging, meaning you still get all the things that pop in the original version as well as the barrel characteristics. The beer has been aging in Jack Daniels, apple brandy and Cabernet barrels since January 2012

Tuesday morning, the details for the release of the beer were finally announced. They are as follows:

  • The bottles will be released Friday, July 12, at 3 p.m. at the brewery.
  • There will be a four (4) bottle limit per person of each variant and 12 in total, in accordance with SC law. The brewery may reduce that limit based on how big of a crowd shows up.
  • Each 22 oz. bottle will cost $20 plus tax.
  • Bottles will not be held or reserved. You can only get them by showing up at the brewery and waiting with everyone else.

Justin Blåbær fever consumes SC

To say I’ve been excited for the release of Justin Blåbær – the new collaboration from Evil Twin, Westbrook, and the Charleston Beer Exchange – is an understatement. In fact, I can’t remember ever wanting to get my hands on a bottle of beer so badly as this one.

Sure, the beer sounds fantastic – a 4.5% Berliner weisse brewery with blueberries – but that’s secondary. The label artwork … Jesus Christ, is that not the most glorious thing you’ve ever seen? I’m going to frame it!

Not only do you get Rich Carley (CBX) talking about his first kiss, Ed and Morgan (Westbrook) with Danish fever, Ryan Witter-Merithew (Fanø Brughus) being shy AND Brian Ewing (12 Percent Imports) and Scott Shor (CBX) doing … um … all pictured on one bottle. But possibly the most wonderful photo of Evil Twin’s Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø takes up the majority of the artwork. It’s just … there aren’t words for how gloriously ridiculous this artwork is.

The beer’s already hit Charleston and should be arriving in Columbia and Greenville later this week.
