Westbrook quietly releases 3 new barrel-aged beers
In an under-the-radar move late last week, Westbrook quietly debuted three new barrel-aged beers.
Evil Twin Double Barrel Jesus rises soon
In their seemingly ceaseless campaign to create bigger and bolder versions of their beers – see: Imperial Doughnut Break, BBL Imperial Biscotti Break – Evil Twin has once again created another beast of a brew, this time taking their Even More Jesus imperial stout, dumping it in bourbon barrels and then blending the result.
Westbrook Gose returns in April
Tuesday, Westbrook announced that they’re preparing to brew and package their increasingly popular Gose once again, with a planned April release. The announcement was made alongside a picture of 200,000 empty Gose cans waiting to be filled. (Ed. note: That’s my preorder alone. I’m going to need to build a walk-in cooler quickly.)
Since it made the transition from bottles to cans last year, Gose has skyrocketed in popularity. For a time, it was the top-ranked beer in its style on both BeerAdvocate and RateBeer, and Gose has popped up on numerous best-of lists during the past year. (I recall having an easier time finding bottles of Mexican Cake than cans of Gose when both were out last year.) Expect anticipation and excitement to rise in advance of its release a month from now.
SC breweries, beer spots snag multiple RateBeer Best titles
Every year, beer review website and database RateBeer compiles its RateBeer Best list of the world’s best beers, breweries, bars and stores based on ratings and reviews by users. During the past week, the rankings have been slowly unveiled day by day, and as each new category was announced, South Carolina breweries and more racked up quite a few accolades. Here’s a rundown of who won what.
Westbrook’s Shane’s Big DIPA returns next month
Westbrook has announced Shane’s Big DIPA will return to the market in February.
First released in March of 2013, the 9.6% imperial IPA is the brainchild of brewer Shane Cummings. It’s a massively hoppy 80 IBU DIPA that was really well-received when it was first released and should be just as popular the second go-around.
Also coming from Westbrook: Gose cans in April and the return of Mexican Cake in May.
Westbrook releases 3rd anniversary brew, plans anniversary celebration
They grow up so fast, don’t they? It’s been about three years since Westbrook opened its door to the public, and in keeping with tradition, the brewery has released its much-anticipated anniversary brew.
In addition, a few brand new brews will be on tap at the brewery this weekend to celebrate the occasion.
For its third anniversary, Westbrook brewed Orange Bliss, a 9.1% chocolate orange imperial stout. Early reports suggest it lives up to its name: a rich, chocolatey imperial stout with a strong orange-forward flavor. The beer was released in the tasting room late last week and hit distribution Tuesday. Expect to find it at your local beer shop soon.
Orange Bliss follows last year’s Cap’n Skoon’s Ballistic Stout and the first anniversary Mexican Cake.
And starting Thursday, December 19, the brewery will celebrate three years of great SC beer by tapping some special new treats. In addition to Orange Bliss, Mr. Chipper (a Flanders Red aged in red wine barrels for nearly three years) and Rhubarb Remix (Weisse Weisse Baby with rhubarb and strawberries added) will be available on draft and in bottles at the brewery’s tasting room.
