SC breweries, beer spots snag multiple RateBeer Best titles

Every year, beer review website and database RateBeer compiles its RateBeer Best list of the world’s best beers, breweries, bars and stores based on ratings and reviews by users. During the past week, the rankings have been slowly unveiled day by day, and as each new category was announced, South Carolina breweries and more racked up quite a few accolades. Here’s a rundown of who won what.

Westbrook claimed numerous wins in a range of categories, including being named one of the top 100 breweries in the world. Westbrook was also dubbed the best brewery in South Carolina, and many Westbrook beers were also ranked among the best. On a local level, Mexican Cake was named the state’s best beer, and on a national level, Dark Helmet was ranked the 13th-best dark lager while Gozu and Gose were ranked 11th and 12, respectively, in the Traditional category.

As for the best places to get beer in SC, locations throughout the state received recognition. Barley’s in Greenville was named the best restaurant; the Charleston Beer Exchange was named the best bottle shop; Greenville’s Whole Foods was named best grocery store; and Columbia’s Flying Saucer was named best bar.

Speaking of CBX, it was named one of the best beer retailers in the world, along with its Upstate installation, the Greenville Beer Exchange.

Also of note: While no SC brews landed on the best beers in the world list, Evil Twin‘s Imperial Biscotti Break, which is regularly brewed at Westbrook, made the top 100.
