Brewery 85 readies for retail launch, festival appearance
We’re a little more than two weeks out from the grand opening of Brewery 85, and in the run-up to its public opening, Greenville’s soon-to-be newest brewery will be making a few appearances around the city this week to give drinkers a literal taste of what’s to come.
On Thursday, January 16, The Community Tap will host a retail launch for Brewery 85. Will and Meredith McCameron and Jeremy Caldwell will be on hand to talk about the brewery and hand out tastes of some of their brews. The free tasting runs from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.
Then, on Sunday, January 19, Brewery 85 will be setting up at Barley’s Biggest Little Beer Fest, joining a bevy of South Carolina’s finest breweries. Two of their flagship beers will be available: Southern Style, a 5.5% American pale ale, and Quittin’ Time, a 7.5% Helles bock.
Brewery 85 will open to the public on February 1.
Wooden Skiff Brewing Co. coming to Hilton Head
The coastal region near South Carolina’s southern tip is in line to get its second production brewery once Hilton Head Island’s Wooden Skiff Brewing Co. comes online in the next few months.
When it begins production in early 2014, the brewery will be the first production facility on Hilton Head. (Hilton Head Brewing Co. is still around, but it’s technically a brewpub.) A look through Wooden Skiff’s Facebook page shows progress has been steady throughout 2013. The brewery already has its federal license, cold storage room, kegs and they’re in the process of constructing a warehouse and tasting room.
As far as beer goes, Wooden Skiff’s first releases will be the Swamp Fox Irish Red Ale and May River Sunset Blonde Ale. The tasting room is expected to be opened by the end of February.
Ridgeland’s River Dog is also located in the region, about 40 miles inland from HHI. Stay tuned for more details
RJ Rockers introduces new witbier
As part of its expanding lineup, RJ Rockers earlier this week announced it would be introducing a new year-round Belgian-style witbier to kick off 2014.
Witty Twitster – which, side note, is a great name – is described as the “perfect anytime ale” brewed with coriander and orange peel, and clocking in at a mellow 4.5% ABV. The beer will join RJR’s yearly lineup soon.
You can get a better look at the packaging for that and their new seasonal Good Boy Stout here.
Tradesman will be Charleston’s next brewery
It’s a day of the week, so you know what that means: There’s another brewery opening in Charleston.
Tradesman Brewing Co., a nano brewery in planning, will be opening soon near many of the city’s other breweries. So far, they’ve established a brewhouse, received their federal brewing license and are in the process of obtaining a state license. The brewery did not open by the end of 2013 as it had hoped but will be pouring some of its beers at an upcoming event. Look for an official opening in the near future.
Charleston is currently home to six active breweries with more in the planning stages.
RJ Rockers shakes things up with Hop Quake
As part of its expanding lineup, RJ Rockers will be tapping its newest beer during its regular tasting and tour schedule tonight.
Hop Quake is a 6.5% IPA measuring in at 63 IBUs brewed with Warrior, Cascade, Centennial and Columbus hops. Not too hoppy and not too heavy, it should be a good sipper for the increasingly warm South Carolina December.
RJR is open for tours and tastings from 5-7 PM.
Green Man launching in Upstate next January
Asheville’s Green Man Brewery will be launching in its first South Carolina market in early 2014.
Following news from the Greenville Beer Exchange last week that the North Carolina beer maker would be available in the area soon, Green Man announced it would begin distributing to the Greenville and Clemson markets starting January 2014. Expect to see their year-round IPA, ESB and Porter – all of which were recently released in six packs – as the first regular offerings.
Green Man started out as a brewpub in downtown Asheville in 1997 at what is now Jack of the Wood. It morphed into a full-fledged brewery in 2010 and is now located down from The Orange Peel and Wicked Weed off Biltmore Avenue, and around the corner from much-hyped upstart Burial Beer Co. They’ll join fellow Asheville breweries Highland and French Broad in the Palmetto State distribution system.
