Thomas Creek‘s new taproom has been up and running for a couple of weeks, but the brewery is planning a grand opening celebration next week to coincide with their regular Cask Night event and the inaugural Greenville Craft Beer Week.

House of Brews’ 2nd anniversary celebration is Saturday
The Community Tap isn’t the only South Carolina craft beer store celebrating an anniversary this weekend. In the Lowcountry, Mt. Pleasant’s House of Brews also has a shindig planned.
On Saturday, June 29, HOB will celebrate two years of slinging beers with its own anniversary party. From 2 p.m. until, the house cum beer store will be serving roasted pig courtesy Finz Bar & Grill (with all proceeds going to support the Wounded Warrior Project) and serving up all the delicious craft brews they have on tap. Additionally, a special cask of Westbrook IPA with mandarin oranges, peaches and mint will also be tapped, along with a cask of COAST‘s Saison du Fus.
House of Brews is located at 1537-C Ben Sawyer Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant.
Closed for Business tapping special Mexican Cake cask Wednesday
Mexican Cake fever has been in full effect since Westbrook‘s now-annual beer was re-released last week, and Closed for Business is looking to give you more of what you want and then some this week.
On Wednesday, the Charleston bar and restaurant is tapping a special cask of the 10.5% imperial stout, which is brewed with Habanero peppers, cinnamon, vanilla beans and cacao nibs. C4B is putting even more of all those ingredients in this cask. They describe it as “Mexican Cake on Tijuana steroids.”
There will be plenty of other Westbrook brews on tap that night as well, including White Thai, IPA, The Raver, Bearded Farmer: Thomas, Weisse Weisse Baby and Gose.
The cask gets tapped at 6 p.m. and will not last long.
Thomas Creek hosts Locks of Love fundraiser
The next Thomas Creek Cask Night – being held Tuesday, April 30 – will be an extra special one for the brewery as they work to raise money for the Locks of Love children’s charity.
Tyler, a retired U.S. Marine, has been growing his hair for the past two years since he finish his time in the corps. That Tuesday, his locks will be cut and donated to the charity, which fashions wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions.
To raise money for the charity, a silent auction will be held to determine who gets to cut Tyler’s hair for the first time in two years. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 each with winners also having the chance to cut. Additional donations will also be accepted.
If helping a good cause it’s reason enough to come out, the brewery will be tapping a cask of its River Falls Red Ale aged with Citra hops. As usual, admission is $5, and the fun runs from 5-8 p.m.
Thomas Creek celebrates 1st anniversary of Cask Night
Greenville’s Thomas Creek celebrated the 1st anniversary of its monthly Cask Night on Tuesday, opening the brewery’s doors and giving patrons the chance to sample three of the brewery’s beers blended with a variety of ingredients.
And if Tuesday’s party was any indication, the monthly event won’t be losing steam any time soon.
Starting in February 2012 and held once a month since, Cask Night allows the brewery to put a little twist on it’s already solid selection of beers. They’ve mixed their Octoberfest with toasted pecans, their Pump House Porter with bourbon-soaked oak chips, their Coffee Oatmeal Stout with hazelnuts and so on. But for Tuesday’s anniversary, three of the most popular casks from the past year were brought out again:
- Deep Water Dopplebock with cocao nibs, cherries and vanilla, a mix that started with smooth, rich chocolate and vanilla notes at first but warmed into a sweet but tart taste;
- Up the Creek Extreme IPA with Granny Smith apples and cinnamon sticks, my personal favorite of the night and a mix that was a perfect blend of tart and spice; and
- Class 5 IPA with lime zest, an interesting take on a citrus-forward IPA that left a lot of people puckering.
All of these were tapped just a few days after two completely different casks were sampled at Brewvival. There, TC took the Dopplebock and mixed it with Fig Newtons and ‘Nilla Wafers, and also blended Up the Creek with black cherries and pink peppercorns. Having sampled all five casks – multiple times – it’s clear TC has an taste for what works.
You don’t have to take my word for it either. You can ask the 330-plus people who showed up to the brewery on Tuesday. That was the final count and more than double what the brewery gets on a given cask night.
This was my first visit to the brewery and I’ve got to say, I’m impressed with what they’ve got going on in the Upstate. It’s clear from Tuesday the brewery is seeing increased success and has a strong, growing fan base. Which is good, because I have it on good authority you’ll be seeing a lot more of Thomas Creek in the months and years to come.
