Palmetto launches in Columbia Feb. 3

PalmettoSouth Carolina’s oldest brewery announced during the weekend it would begin distribution in the Capitol City starting next month.

Palmetto, which has been producing beer in Charleston since 1993, was in attendance at Saturday’s World Beer Festival in Columbia and announced Columbians would see the brewery begin distribution in town Monday, February 3.

Palmetto produces four year-round beers: Amber Ale (5.7%), Pale Ale (5.6%), Charleston Lager (5.4%) and my personal favorite, their Espresso Porter (6.4%). They also produce a number of special releases, including Ginger Slap, their Amber Ale with ginger and cardamom, and Ghost Rider, their Pale Ale, with cherries and smoked ghost peppers.

Look for draft and bottles available around Columbia soon.

Equipment arrives at Swamp Rabbit

SRBT-LogoMonday was no day off for the folks at Swamp Rabbit, the upcoming brewery opening in Travelers Rest. The future Upstate brewery spent the holiday unloading flatbed trucks and moving equipment into the warehouse.

Throughout Monday morning, Swamp Rabbit documented and arrival and installation of 14 tanks, including a glycol chiller, conical fermenters, cold liquor tanks and more. When operational, the 10-barrel brew house will begin producing four flagship beers, including a Belgian white and Oktoberfest. The brewers have to have everything up and running and the brewery open sometime in March.

Conquest expands to Greenville distribution in February

ConquestA little more than a year after first launching in Columbia, Conquest will be expanding to its first market outside of the Midlands area beginning next month.

While the final details are still being worked out, officials with both the brewery and its distributor, Budweiser of Columbia, confirmed Monday that talks to bring Conquest to the Greenville area had commenced. A tentative launch date of February 10 is being eyed. Conquest will likely use the Budweiser affiliate in Greenville for distribution there.

Conquest has said it plans to eventually be available statewide but expansion outside of the Midlands would occur only after local demand could be met. The brewery has shipped occasional kegs to bars outside of the Columbia area and was a presence at the 2013 Brewvival festival, but this deal marks the first time the Columbia brewery will officially be distributed in an outside market. Expect draft of the brewery’s year-round offerings up first.
