Pint Bill compromise reached

scbrewers

After sweating it out for the past couple of weeks, South Carolina breweries and beer geeks on Thursday finally got a compromise on the state’s Pint Bill.

You’ll recall that a couple of weeks ago, Republican Greenville Sen. Mike Fair placed on objection on the Senate’s version of the legislation at the behest of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The bill couldn’t make it to the floor of the Senate for discussion or a vote until Fair removed his objection, and since last week, Fair, MADD and representatives from the S.C. Brewers Association have been working behind the scenes to work out a compromise.

Thursday afternoon, the details of that deal were finally released. Here’s what they worked out:

  • The maximum individual on-premises consumption cap has been set at 48 ounces. That includes pints and samples. While lower than the 64 ounces originally hoped for, it still means you’ll be able to enjoy up to three pints at a brewery;
  • Brewers will be fined for over-serving patrons. This, included with the original requirement that brewery workers go through DUI and safety training means more security for visitors and non-visitors alike;
  • No beer above 10% ABW (12.5% ABV) can be served as a sample or a pint. You can still buy higher-ABV beers to take home, but you can’t drink them at the brewery.

With that compromise in place, Sen. Fair has reportedly lifted his objection, clearing the way for the bill to hit the Senate floor for a vote. When it gets there, Sen. Sean Bennett (R-Summerville) will introduce an amendment to replace the insurance requirement of $1 million per occurrence and $10 million aggregate.

No word on exactly when the bill will be hit the floor, but it’s safe to say SC beer geeks are breathing a little easier today.

Georgia’s Red Hare Brewing Co. begins SC distribution

RedHare

Another new Southeastern brewery has sneaked into the South Carolina market recently. This time, it’s Red Hare Brewing Co. out of Marietta, GA.

The Metro Atlanta brewery mentioned on Twitter that they planned to distribute in Charleston soon, and they weren’t kidding. Cans of the brewery’s Gangway IPA and Watership Brown Ale arrived at the Charleston Beer Exchange on Wednesday.

The 4-year-old, 11,000-square-foot brewery houses a 20-barrel brewhouse that can put out 220 barrels a year. In addition to Gangway and Watership, the brewery also regularly produces their flagship Long Day Lager and a series of one-off limited release beers under the Rabbit’s Reserve Series.

South Carolina is the only state other than Georgia the brewery has distribution in. No word on when or if they plan to expand into other markets, but they told me they’ll be bringing their “whole lineup” to the state, so expect to see cans of Long Day and Rabbit’s Reserve releases sooner or later.

Growler Haus progresses toward Spartanburg expansion

GrowlerHausAnderson’s Growler Haus is continuing on the path toward opening a second location in downtown Spartanburg, although they’ve deviated somewhat from their original plan.

In March, I wrote about how the Anderson-based growler store had entered itself in Spartanburg’s Main Street Challenge for a chance to win a prime spot in downtown Spartanburg as well as some money to cover rent for the first year. But according to a story from the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, Growler Haus owner Craig Kinley decided to withdraw from the competition and instead seize on a vacant property on his own.

Kinley signed a lease on a former cigar shop at 113 N. Church St. in Spartanburg and hopes to have the second Growler Haus location open by the summer.

The store is still continuing with its crowdsourced fundraising campaign, but that’s not going so well for them. With a little more than two weeks left, the campaign has taken in just $720 of the $12,000 goal. However, that doesn’t seem to be slowing them down.

When it opens, the store will offer the same amenities as its main location: the opportunity to buy a pint to enjoy there or grab a growler to take home. A light food menu will also be offered, as well as beer dinners, private tastings and so on in the future.

The Barley’s “Most Arrogant Bash” beer list is ridiculous

GregFace

Remember how Barley’s in Greenville won Stone‘s Most Arrogant Bar Challenge of 2012, beating out hundreds of other bars across the country? Well, they did, and as a result got the chance to host a massive Stone-centric Most Arrogant Bash featuring a slew of rare and unique Stone brews and a visit from Stone CEO Greg Koch himself.

Thursday morning, the bar released the tap list for the event, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 13, beginning at 7 p.m. As the headline for this post says, that list is ridiculous.
