Homebrewers: Want a recipe brewed at RJ Rockers?

RJRockers

Are you a homebrewer who wants to have a winning recipe brewed on a professional full-scale level? RJ Rockers and Growlers Haus are offering you the chance to do just that.

The Spartanburg brewery and beer store are teaming up for the Hub City Hog Fest Home Brew competition on March 28. The winning regional homebrewer will have the chance to brew their winning recipe on the brewery’s 30 BBL system.

You can find all of the details about the competition here.

RJ Rockers announces Peachy King details

RJRockers

Impeachment was a draft-only imperial wheat ale brewed by Spartanburg’s RJ Rockers. But sadly, Impeachment is dead. However, Peachy King will arise in its place beginning in March and – for the first time – in bottles.

Brewery reps told me last fall the name “Impeachment” was met with mixed signals among drinkers. The name came from an online contest the brewery ran and it was never meant to be a jab, but with it joining their expanded four-pack limited-release lineup, RJR chose to rebrand the beer something less political. And so, Peachy King took the throne.

On Tuesday, the new label artwork was reveled along with release details. The 9% imperial ale brewed with spices and peaches – a big brother to now-year-round Son of a Peach – will be available in four packs for the first time and on store shelves in early March.

Holy City collaborates with SC, NC, GA breweries for Brewvival

holycity

If you’ve been following Brewvival’s Twitter account (and if you’re not, you really should), you’ve noticed they’ve slowly been releasing the beers and breweries that will be appearing at the festival. And there was quite an announcement Wednesday afternoon: Of the five beers Holy City will have on hand, four will be collaborations with regional breweries.

In addition to a Jack Daniels barrel-aged version of their Manuel Fantastico barleywine, HCB will also be offering the following:

  • Holy Weed, an imperial IPA brewed in collaboration with Wicked Weed out of Asheville, NC. It’ll include green tea from the Charleston Tea Plantation.
  • Sister City Saison, a farmhouse ale brewed in collaboration with Savannah’s Southbound Brewing Co. This one’s an imperial saison brewed with rose hips.
  • Half Calf, brewed with Spartanburg’s RJ Rockers. It’s a coffee milk stout that includes coffee from Coastal Coffee Roasters in Summerville.
  • Shades of Grace, a blend of HCB’s Graveyard Shiftee and NoDa of Charlotte’s Imperial Coco Loco. So, a massive imperial porter.

Brewvival will be held Saturday, February 22, at the field across from COAST. It will sell out.

RJ Rockers Day Drinker up for Full Pint’s best of 2013

RJRockers

Beer blogs and their best-of lists are a dime a dozen these days (guilty as charged), but when one of South Carolina’s own makes it on a national best-of poll, it’s worthy of rallying the troops for.

The Full Pint, a Southern California-based beer blogging duo, recently compiled a list of what it thinks are the best beers of 2013, and then turned that list into a poll for readers to vote on. The list contains some pretty big names – Prairie, Hill Farmstead, Perennial, Cigar City and so on – but among them is SC’s own RJ Rockers. The Full Pint has nominated the Spartanburg brewery’s Day Drinker IPA as one of the best of last year.

It may seem like an uphill battle, but as of press time, RJR is holding at No. 13 among the 60-plus beers on the list. Cast your vote for Day Drinker here.

RJ Rockers introduces new witbier

RJRockers

As part of its expanding lineup, RJ Rockers earlier this week announced it would be introducing a new year-round Belgian-style witbier to kick off 2014.

Witty Twitster – which, side note, is a great name – is described as the “perfect anytime ale” brewed with coriander and orange peel, and clocking in at a mellow 4.5% ABV. The beer will join RJR’s yearly lineup soon.

You can get a better look at the packaging for that and their new seasonal Good Boy Stout here.

RJ Rockers shakes things up with Hop Quake

RJRockers

As part of its expanding lineup, RJ Rockers will be tapping its newest beer during its regular tasting and tour schedule tonight.

Hop Quake is a 6.5% IPA measuring in at 63 IBUs brewed with Warrior, Cascade, Centennial and Columbus hops. Not too hoppy and not too heavy, it should be a good sipper for the increasingly warm South Carolina December.

RJR is open for tours and tastings from 5-7 PM.
