Westbrook Gose returns in April

Westbrook

This is a sight to behold.

Tuesday, Westbrook announced that they’re preparing to brew and package their increasingly popular Gose once again, with a planned April release. The announcement was made alongside a picture of 200,000 empty Gose cans waiting to be filled. (Ed. note: That’s my preorder alone. I’m going to need to build a walk-in cooler quickly.)

Since it made the transition from bottles to cans last year, Gose has skyrocketed in popularity. For a time, it was the top-ranked beer in its style on both BeerAdvocate and RateBeer, and Gose has popped up on numerous best-of lists during the past year. (I recall having an easier time finding bottles of Mexican Cake than cans of Gose when both were out last year.) Expect anticipation and excitement to rise in advance of its release a month from now.

Yeast, Charleston’s only homebrew shop, opens Saturday

Yeast

Charleston is arguably the hub of South Carolina’s craft beer scene. With six operational breweries (and more on the way), numerous stores, bars, restaurants and brewpubs, the coastal city has everything you’d want to satiate your beer-related needs.

Except one. Strangely enough, the Charleston area doesn’t have a dedicated homebrew supply store where burgeoning brewers can locally purchase their goods. That is, until now.

Westbrook’s Shane’s Big DIPA returns next month

Westbrook

Westbrook has announced Shane’s Big DIPA will return to the market in February.

First released in March of 2013, the 9.6% imperial IPA is the brainchild of brewer Shane Cummings. It’s a massively hoppy 80 IBU DIPA that was really well-received when it was first released and should be just as popular the second go-around.

Also coming from Westbrook: Gose cans in April and the return of Mexican Cake in May.

Westbrook launches in Upstate New York today.

Westbrook

Westbrook is expanding its footprint in New York beginning today after inking a deal with an Upstate distributor.

The Lowcountry brewery announced late last week it would launch in Upstate New York and the Hudson Valley beginning December 16. The brewery’s year-round cans – IPA, White Thai and One Claw – will be available first with Gose following in the spring, as well the rotating seasonals. Draft will arrive in early 2014.

Albany-based Remarkable Liquids – which sells only craft beer, meads and ciders –  will serve as Westbrook’s regional distributor. The brewery is already available in other parts of the state. “We are really excited to be working with a distributor that truly understands and believes in craft beer,” brewery founder and CEO Edward Westbrook said in a press release. “Upstate NY is a surprisingly craft savvy market and we are happy to finally be there.”

Outside of South Carolina and NY, Westbrook is available in Georgia and select parts of Alabama.

Freehouse announces first release details

Freehouse

Freehouse, the Charleston area’s newest brewery, announced details of its first releases last Friday afternoon. Throughout this week, bars in the greater Charleston area will be tapping Freehouse brews for the first time. • Ashley Farmhouse Ale, a 5% saison with notes of rye and spice and a mild hop note
  • Green Door IPA, a sessionable English-style IPA using American hops. ‘Green Door’ refers to Freehouse Brewery’s big green entranceway, but is also a reference to their organic policies
