Screenshot 2014-09-29 10.13.20The number of breweries representing the Palmetto State at the 32nd annual Great American Beer Festival – being held in Denver, CO this week, Oct. 2-4 – has tripled from last year, with nine of South Carolina’s finest making their way to the country’s largest beer festival and competition.

Pluff Mud Porter coming to six packs

holycity

Fans of Holy City‘s GABF gold medal-winning Pluff Mud Porter woke up to an early Christmas present last Saturday: News that the beer will be available in six packs beginning next year.

It’s not exactly secret the Charleston brewery was looking to get the beer in 12 oz. bottles, but an official announcement was made during the weekend. Keep an eye out for them in early 2014.

Holy City Pluff Mud returns to bottles

PluffMudsix

After some fits and starts with their new bottling line, the GABF gold medal-winning Pluff Mud Porter from Holy City has returned to bottled format.

With the new piece of tech properly up and running, Holy City began filling 22 oz. bombers of the beer for sale last week for only $5 a pop. (You can see the new label artwork above. No six packs yet.)

Bottles are being sold only at the brewery and in the Charleston area for the time being, but now that they have the capability to produce more bottles, the beer could see a wider distribution soon.

Few SC breweries traveling to GABF

GABF

Just three South Carolina breweries have confirmed they will be representing the Palmetto State at the 31st annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, this fall.

Registration for the annual mecca of beer festivals opened to brewers on Tuesday, and while some encountered problems when it came to registration, a handful of SC breweries were able to get their names on the list.

Charleston’s Holy City and Palmetto breweries and Spartanburg’s RJ Rockers will all be present at the festival – running Oct. 10-12 – among the 600 total breweries who were able to register. There are an estimated 2,400 craft breweries operating in the US, so the chances of getting into the festival to pour decrease with each passing year.

Greenville’s Thomas Creek is on the waiting list and may still appear, but there’s no guarantee.

Breweries who have confirmed they will not be appearing at GABF: Westbrook, COAST, Quest and Conquest. No word on Frothy Beard, New South or River Dog.

World of Beer hosting NoDa Brewery Spotlight June 20

NoDa-Brewing

It’s been great having Charlotte’s NoDa Brewing Co. in South Carolina for the past few weeks. Ever since they hit the Columbia market, the North Carolina brewery has been a hit at bars across the city, with numerous kegs being kicked at the city’s World of Beer location.

NoDa’s initial launch lineup – Jam Session Pale Ale, Ramble on Red, Hop, Drop & Roll Imperial IPA and GABF medal-winning Coco Loco Porter – was impressive, and NoDa fans such as myself were promised there was more on the way. And next week, you’ll be able to get another taste of one of Charlotte’s best.

WOB will feature NoDa in their Brewery Spotlight series with an event on Thursday, June 20. In addition to the four beers already released, a few new NoDa brews will make their first appearance in the Capital City, including:

  • Ghost Hop, a 5.9% white IPA brewed with Amarillo and Centennial hops and fermented with Belgian wit yeast;
  • Woody & Wilcox, a straight-up American IPA with Columbus, Magnum, Cascade and Santiam hops coming in at 6%; and
  • Monk’s Trunks, a Belgian pale ale with Belgian malts and European hops at 5.6%.

I was in Charlotte a couple of weekends ago and stopped by NoDa for a few pints, so trust me when I say these guys do not make bad beer. Be sure to come out and show some love.

Six packs, new artwork planned for Holy City Pluff Mud (in a few months)

PluffMudsix

EDIT: False alarm, folks! Seems as if this was just some artwork thought up by the designer of Holy City’s mural and taped on bottles and packaging. That’s why you don’t blog before you have a cup of coffee. (And now that I look at it, there’s clearly a piece of tape on the bottom right corner of that six pack.) Six packs and new artwork are in the works, but they’re a few months off. Still, fantastic artwork and something I’m sure a lot of people would love to see on shelves one day.

For the longest time, Holy City‘s GABF gold medal-winning Pluff Mud Porter has been available in only 22 oz. bomber bottles or on draft. But if the above photo – which was posted on the Instagram feed of the Charleston Beer Week – is any indication, that’ll be changing.

From the looks of things, Pluff Mud will be coming to six-pack bottles as well as getting some new label artwork on both the smaller bottles (seen on the left) and bombers (on the right). The current label features the Holy City logo on a white background and the GABF gold medal prominently displayed, as it should be.

No word on if this is the final artwork, when it’ll be hitting shelves, etc. But on a personal level, I say the more Pluff Mud, the better.
