River Dog plans to can beer

riverdogCanning beers is clearly the rage in the craft beer community these days, including breweries in South Carolina. Westbrook will be canning even more beers this year, and Quest and Brewery 85 plan to stick with only caning their offerings. And now, Ridgeland’s River Dog Brewing Co. has announced it too will soon begin producing canned beers.

In a story from The (Hilton Head) Island Packet, River Dog’s Josh Luman said the coastal brewery will start putting its beer in cans beginning later this year. No news on when cans will hit the market or which River Dog beers will make it to cans.

Luman also said the brewery is buoyed by the Pint Bill and wants to make their spot more of a destination location.

“Now, there is a far more compelling reason for people to come visit us,” he said. “In some cases, people have to travel a great distance to come visit our brewery. Now, we feel like we can truly have the opportunity to make this a special place for them and really make it worth their time. This bill will help legitimize S.C. beer in the world beer community.”

Closed for Business tapping special Mexican Cake cask Wednesday

CFB

Mexican Cake fever has been in full effect since Westbrook‘s now-annual beer was re-released last week, and Closed for Business is looking to give you more of what you want and then some this week.

On Wednesday, the Charleston bar and restaurant is tapping a special cask of the 10.5% imperial stout, which is brewed with Habanero peppers, cinnamon, vanilla beans and cacao nibs. C4B is putting even more of all those ingredients in this cask. They describe it as “Mexican Cake on Tijuana steroids.”

There will be plenty of other Westbrook brews on tap that night as well, including White Thai, IPA, The Raver, Bearded Farmer: Thomas, Weisse Weisse Baby and Gose.

The cask gets tapped at 6 p.m. and will not last long.

Holy City expands tap system at brewery

HCBtaps

I’m going to eschew the typical “yo dawg” jokes and just sticks with the facts: Holy City is about to put a lot more beer in your mouth.

On Friday, the brewery unveiled its brand new tap system, which has been expanded from five tap lines to 20. There were 17 different Holy City brews pouring to kick off the long weekend. This will be a welcomed change to people who love Holy City’s brews but always wished there were more than a handful on tap for samples.

In addition to tasting room staples – Pluff Mud Porter, HC Pilsner – there were a lot of unique and rare offerings, including three different versions of Pluff Mud aged with peppers, vintages of the New Year’s Resolution Doppelbock and some bourbon barrel-aged versions of their beers.

The new system will also be perfect for the brewery once the Pint Bill goes into effect. Under the new law, you’ll be able to try up to 12 4-ounce samples, which will definitely be a possibility once the bill becomes law.

The tap system expansion comes on the heels of the construction of a new, bigger bar. Everything will certainly be put to good use when the Pint Bill goes into effect.
