In news that’s sure to be met with a mix of excitement and “meh,” Goose Island announced late last week that the company’s Bourbon County brand of barrel-aged stouts and barleywines would be expanding from limited to countrywide availability, where legal. While it’s long been rumored Bourbon County availability would be tied to sales of year-round Goose Island offerings following their post-AB InBev purchase national rollout, that won’t be the case this fall.
South Carolina, of course, is included in that expansion. Beginning (and possibly ending) on Friday, November 29 – yes, Black Friday – the Palmetto State will join the rest of the country in the release of four Bourbon County brands: the traditional Brand Stout, Bourbon County Brand Coffee and Bourbon County Brand Barleywine available in four packs of 12 oz. bottles, as well as the Backyard Rye Bourbon County Brand Stout, a new entry aged in Templeton Rye whiskey barrels with fresh mulberries, marionberries and boysenberries.
All four will be available in SC, but exactly how much remains to be seen. According to one store owner I spoke with, he was told the state’s allotment would be large enough that there would be plenty to go around. Exact numbers are being released yet, but expect to see it pop up at your local go-to beer spot.
